Rights

The concept of rights has become a vague notion in our post modern world. At it’s most basic form it concerns claims a person has of ownership. This ownership can be material or simply a freedom for oneself. Ownership has to do with having authority to make decisions with your life and possessions. A free person decides what his life is going to consist of and an owner of property decides what what to do with it. Rights and justice go hand in hand.

Justice is a measure of fairness. When there is an agreement between two parties concerning freedoms or material ownership, justice means that both parties are satisfied that the agreement was kept. When making a claim, sometimes an arbitrator is needed to help the parties perceive they are getting their just due. This is one concept of rights and it is synonymous with having a claim to something. Some call this positive rights.

When we look at enumerated rights, they are an agreement between a people and their government. These are more limits than anything. There are no property claims but a claim of who has authority over specific areas of the citizen’s lives. It is necessary to have a Constitutions and Bill of Rights so our governing powers don’t make claims over areas of our lives that is outside their scope. Governing authority tend to end up thinking the citizens exist for their benefit rather than the correct view that they are servants to the people.  History shows that this encroachment only grows until a society reaches a point where reforms or outright rebellions occur to bring freedom back to the citizens. These laws are are what some call negative rights.

A famous mention of the word “rights” is in the Declaration of Independence. In a world that had classes of elites making claims of control over other peoples lives, this was a stark contrast. Breeding and class limited people from reaching their potential at that time. Kings claimed to have authority over people that was given by God. In our environment today it is difficult to comprehend limits like this. Today, people manufacture classes and limits in order to give themselves a cause. Being the champion of a cause gives honor and wealth to some. But there is a big difference between actual rights violations and perceived causes. A person having a cause can only demand a passive response, but if it is a violation of rights, a radical response is needed. This is why causes and rights have become synonymous in the modern age. Being poor amid opportunity is a sad thing and we should all take up the cause of the poor. But no one has a right to wealth, but we all have a right to earn it.

Painting with Our Thoughts

When the rain stops falling, the earth will be refreshed

Cloudy days make beautiful sunsets
When snow stops blowing, it sparkles in the sun
The things we dream have only just begun.

It takes a little sweat to make a flower bloom
The toughest things give the deepest joy
To make a work of art, you can’t be in a rush
We’re painting with our thoughts and not a brush.

When life gets hard, a heart will find a way
A mind can rest at ease with just a light
No need to be afraid,  We can always build
Though efforts seem to fail, love never will.

Meliae

While enjoying a walk in the woods

With a heart full of admiration

A quick movement caught my eye
Some kind of aberration

A voice then, echoed from the trees
That kindled a strong passion
More than I had known before
Deeper than I could fathom

I had to search and find the source
My soul was so inspired
I ran blindly through the trees
Til too much time transpired

She was sitting on a mossy limb
A nymph of gorgeous form
Among daughters born of men
The likes had not been born

I found she was a Meliae
Giving awe when men breath in
The beauty of earth’s forests
They travel on the wind

As we spent some time together
A feeling filled our hearts
We’d fallen deep in love
And couldn’t bear to be apart

With every passing morning
We mused the time away
But the gods forbade our love
So we both began to pray

In the forest dark foreboding
My little nymph was gone
I lost all inspiration
My heart did not belong

Wandering through the darkness now
It’d never be the same
The woods turned cold and empty
Since we could not speak again

Stopping at the water’s edge
Where the sounds of waves inspire
A naiad said she had seen her
She had the same desires.

That night I sought Asteria
The inspiration of the stars
She vowed to share our feelings
To each other from afar

Eternal

It lasts through centuries

And legends form.
Two lovers beat the odds
Some make it through the storm

We feel for these ghosts
It lasts through time
How they tried to show their love
Though it caused a heinous crime

Hidden love is tragic
For memories
But when revealed to another
It continues, eternally

Stand in Awe

Honor proudly raised his chest.

Truth claimed to know what’s best.
Temperance raise his brow.
Patience said,”Not now!”

Justice held his scales up high.
Reason knew exactly why.
Passion came and went.
Self control was spent.

When love arrived, it gave them pause.
Every thought stood in awe.
Nothing could be said
They just bowed their heads

Comprehension

I’m a temperate person known to be strong

At the sound of your voice it didn’t last long
The words captured this soul and gave it a song

My personality fled to a place in the air
To meet with your own wherever they’d dare
Now it’s taking its time lingering there

Maybe some day you’ll be a quick  thought
An impossible dream I had foolishly sought
We both found a love that cannot be bought

Thank you for doing what I couldn’t do

The desires in my heart have my mind fooled
And it can’t comprehend a life without you

All that I want through expanses of  time
The torturous thought in the back of my mind
If I’m sure you are well, I can hope to be fine

Brace and Parry.

I hear a train whistle in the distance.

Late night musings
Firming up my mind and spirit
I am like a centurion on the frontier
Where sensitivities are fatal
I see the bones of those who tried
And bear wounds myself
I must brace and parry
Brace and parry
Crying must be done on the inside
And the warrior will take control
Those at home depend on me
I cannot fail
Brace and parry
Brace and parry
I have wielded the sword so long
Tenderness has been forgotten
I don’t remember what it is like
To brush the hair from a forehead
To calm a worried soul
Brace and parry
Brace and parry
I must stay awake and be diligent
I cannot be a burden to anyone
Hold the standard
Brace and parry
Brace and parry

Cadence

Rickata tic tic

Rain on the skylight
Morning snuggles
An active mind engaged
Retrospect ambition and hope
Brings Ideas and direction
To affirm this is reality
I am these thoughts
The rhythm of the rain
The cadence of life
Rickata tic tic

Unrequited

Its easy to handle unrequited love

Just calling it foolish will do
But when it is reciprocated
The discovery brings euphoria
Followed by the misery of longing
We long to know every thought
It’s like winning the lottery
But you cannot see the cash
Or having the rights to a throne
That you cannot cannot claim
But a good life has the first claim
Along with duty and promise
The burden of longing
Is hard on everyone
So we do what we must
And say what helps
To limit the longing
But love will not change

Forgetful?

When it’s winter, we still think of summer

When it’s night we don’t forget day
Our minds may forget some things
But we never forget who we love

It’s like enjoying a favorite song
But you don’t not know the lyrics well
It’s hard to sing it just right
But you hear it all day long

Love cannot be just a memory
Since it always feels present
It takes more work to suppress
Than to cause a spark to grow
