Understanding

When life seems overwhelming

Guilt and confusion pressing in
Don’t you worry about me
I understand

Justice may pressure your heart
You can’t see right or what’s wrong
Love takes care of it all
I understand

A response can never be wrong
Your heart will always be right
And I know your heart well
I understand

The Sound

There is a sound that can be heard

When the storm drowns thoughts
Dreams lie shattered
And the shards cut deep

This sound cannot be silenced
By the rage of noisome crowds
When we lie battered
Held by defeat

It is wispered on the wind
By the voice of lasting love
Your inner hopes matter
Through the dark it speaks

Wisecracks

It starts with a wisecrack

I said “hey! Someone shares my humor!”
I used to find myself laughing alone quite often.
Thinking I was the only one that thought this way.
Then there’s the nuanced expressions,
The same kind of responses I would have.
A kind of reflection of myself.
The similarities become so uncanny
Half is admiration and the rest is wonder.
And as life is shared, it is easy to talk and make decisions.
Some say you grow into it but sometimes it just “is”.
Nothing life throws is a surprise when we face it together,
It is as if we are our own heckling section
Out there making comments, narratives and humor.
While everyone else is our entertainment.
We are a unique and wonderful pair.
And as we age, it ends with wisecracks too.
That, my friend, is how you experience love.

Supernatural Applications

I am often asked how supernatural things apply to natural things. This is especially a delicate question when applied to religion, philosophy and to principles that don’t have something physical for us to go by except for the things people write. But we can put ideas into simple albeit general terms to organize them and give insight that makes sense.

Let’s say we have a room that is dusty and we can all see it needs to be dusted. Dust takes away from the beauty of the room and is also unsanitary. We can approach it with belief in the supernatural and say that dust fairies caused it and elves will clean it up. When we go beyond what can be seen and proven, we see that it is ineffectual in solving the problem. It may be due to the character of the owner and that he is lazy or is too busy. It could be that the environment is bad such as having a busy dirt road close by. A window might need to be closed; a filtration system installed or it might just need occasional cleaning. The person might need to hire a maid being too busy. The point is that with a little practical study, the cause and solution can easily be found and when we spiritualize it, the solutions become complicated. Did we make the dust fairies mad? In what way do the elves want paid? These questions distract from real solutions.

There might be a supernatural explanation too however. If the owner has anxiety about the future and is doing things to appease their anxiety rather than fixing the problem, they would need something to put their mind at ease. Decisions and actions made out of anxiety tend to be poor ones and a person can get tunnel vision. They would need an epiphany  to redirect them and a way to keep peace in their soul. This would be a proper application of the gospel: Letting someone know that God loves them and went to great lengths to guarantee them a place in heaven is a means to settle anxieties about existence and death. But the room will still need dusted; a natural cause and solution will need to be found.

When supernatural ideas are applied toward natural issues in the wrong way, a door is opened for manipulation. People get a bad taste for religion because it has been used to produce dependency. Religious leaders can put conditions on reaching heaven or having a good experience there and then hold people hostage to them. They enrich themselves through the anxieties of others and therefore teach things that produce more of it. It is important not to limit people from finding ways to feel peaceful about their existence. And people should apply relevance to their own natural lives. But we can’t allow a few people to force their own revelations on everyone else because of the above principles. It complicates finding real solutions and gives room for manipulation. Having the proper separation of secular things  from religious things is as important in personal matters as it is in government.

When we study ethics or the study of being good toward ourselves and others, it doesn’t need to have a supernatural motive. We see that good behavior is reciprocated and if it isn’t we still feel good about ourselves by doing right. With finances, there are principles with budgets and also environmental conditions that are advantageous to possessing wealth. Riches are when a person’s needs are met and wealth is what comes above and beyond that. Our definition of riches will effect our satisfaction. To those anxious about the future, being settled on eternity is one of the greatest riches to have, but you still have to work to eat.  Health is another form of riches and so is having good relationships. To say that focusing on natural good can only take away from spiritual things is for those who are using the wrong application. If we let good stand on it’s own and endorse it while respecting the right of others to put their own spiritual relevance to life, we build a good culture.

Relevance

Our very existence depends on finding relevance

Hearts are quickly disappointed when life doesn’t give it
We search and acquire to fill the void
We travel and settle with hopes we can find it
But relevance is found within each heart
As we open our hearts, it deals with rejections
From those who avoid knowing the real person we are.
Relevance protects itself and hides deep within
Those we feel comfortable with give us confidence
As if confidence was hiding until the right person came along
Love becomes a revelation, and we feel important.
Shared existence begets meaning
This is what we all crave more than anything else

Separation of Powers

People for years have been forming governments but because of human nature, they end up becoming weak or totalitarian. In the 1800s a French philosopher came up with an idea on how a nation can be self governed while enjoying the advantages of strong leadership. His name was Charles-Louis de Secondat and the book was “Spirit of the laws”. He proposed that if we could break up the distribution of powers to our governing authority, we could keep it from descending into tyranny. The word “tyranny” refers to a group or a person forcing others to do things against their will. Majority rule isn’t good when the laws they make violate the rights of others. Hitler had an 80 percent or better popularity in the polls after he took over Germany.

We always hate it when we have to work or play games with those make the rules up as they go and for their own convenience. And we have all had our bouts with those who are judgmental and say we aren’t doing things right. The games are no fun and work is stressful under those circumstances.  In government, these actions cause injustices. The way to avoid injustice is to have one department limited to making the rules, another limited to enforcing them, and another judging how they are applied. That is what we call the separation of powers.

The interests of business and the states are supposed to be represented by Senators while people’s interests are represented by the House of Representatives. They are tasked with making laws for everyone. No other entity is given that privilege or should assume it. We vote people in to provide a function and do their jobs. If they step outside of the scope of their appointed work, it is an injustice to all of us. If they aren’t doing their job by presenting budgets and enacting laws, we aren’t getting our money’s worth.

The President is the chief law enforcement officer and the commander in chief of our army. We put them in power for enforcement of the laws our congress enacts. So when an executive order is enacted, we have to be careful that it doesn’t extend outside the scope of work we appointed for him. The executive branch is supposed to review laws that are presented to make sure there is continuity. He has the power to veto if there is a problem such as something that is unenforceable. A judge or a president who make up laws as they go violate the principle of the separation of powers and expose everyone to the risk of tyranny.

Winter’s Work

When the sky turns into grey

The bright blue begins to fade
Striving ends another day
Working tools are put away

The bitter cold won’t cut me through
Because my mind returns to you

While warming up in my old truck
I’m thanking God for all my luck
I see the gold that I have struck
The ties we have cannot be cut

A million miles can’t hold me back
I’m driving home to our old shack

Through the wind they see me smile
Though the snow begins to pile
Work outdoors gets pretty wild
I think of you, it’s all worthwhile

A hundred hours is just a blur.
In our warm bed I feel you stir.

The Drive

What if the world took time to understand

What goes on inside each other’s heart?
Everyone tries in their own way
To tame thoughts and yearnings
Steering ourselves toward appeasement
Forced to hide behind our fears
Building facades of many kinds
But no one is truly confident
We preen an avatar
And send it out fiind the dream
Then cause offenses along the way
While attempting to reach it
Few understand how hard we try
If we stop reaching there’s a void
Is satisfaction a form of defeat?
It may be the goal of the icon
But a heart only wants to be loved
And finding that knowledge carries us
Beyond the anxious drive
Past the persona we present

The Right Name

I gave it the works, flowers and gifts

Humbled myself and took care of the rift
Didn’t intend to cause any pain
But my mouth had to slip and say the wrong name

love ya dear and will always be true
But my violets are red and my roses are blue
I’ll call you honey from now to the end
Cause I don’t want to be in the doghouse again.
My mother she did the same thing to me
To find the right name it always took three
But a lover will kill if you go through a list
So you better use babe or you’ll never see bliss.
I love ya dear and will always be true
But my violets are red and my roses are blue
I’ll call you honey from now to the end
Cause I don’t want to be in the doghouse again

It Starts With Joy

To know a loved one is happy

Is the best feeling I know
A heart can be truly content
When a friend has joy to show
This is the essence of love
It isn’t in action alone
But to care for another soul
As much as you care for your own
Giving is more than a gift
Beauty is more than a look
It starts with joy inside
Flowing serene like a brook
If I was to lay down my life
It wouldn’t be for money or fame
But to give my love a life of joy
I would endure any pain
