Truth or Fraud

One advantage of having the gift of a rational mind is that one can use it to recognize fraud. There are half-truths, exaggerations and outright frauds presented to us every day. Someone with well exercised reasoning can detect and discard fraud and recognize truth. The more information becomes available, the more important this part of our soul becomes. This site is dedicated to exercising that area of our soul.

The word science can apply to a study concerning any particular topic. It is the word used to describe time spent studying details. In blogs and news feeds, it common for people to digress into details they know little about. This is what some label as fake or deception. When someone claims to have the backing of science it can point to one of two things: time spent on a subject or empirical research.

Empirical science is different from mere scientific observation. It is the way we test claims. Empirical science is structured with rules that give the proper way to conduct experiments so the conclusions are accurate. Every piece of data has to be collected in a consistent manner and there will be a published margin of error. Experts and laymen can review the findings and see how the experiment was conducted. All the variables are taken into account in the publications. To be published in a science journal means experts in the field have reviewed how it was done and it held up to their scrutiny.

There are a lot of claims about medical cures published as fact over the internet. If records of empirical studies cannot be found for them in reputable science journals, the claims have to be considered fraudulent. This has nothing to do with government or the FDA. Snake Oil salesmen have become wealthy for centuries by making fraudulent claims. The internet is full of liposuctioned people selling diet pills and cancer cures. But before dropping a dime, you should always look for reputable empirical research.

Concerning health there are published findings and expert opinions found at http://www.quackwatch.org/
