Resources of the Mind

Mankind has the unique ability to see right and wrong, good and evil, and reason it out among themselves. We can write about issues and discuss our differences among ourselves to form conclusions on what is best for all of us. This is called diplomacy and is the bedrock of a civil society. Those who avoid using this gift are easily deceived and will live a reactive life rather than one of purpose. The more we live by reaction or appetite, the closer we are to animals. When people’s reasoning resembles animals they are considered vicious or barbaric.

We would like to see a world without vicious behavior and there have been different approaches to this. One step up from Barbarism would be servanthood. What this means is that a child has to serve his parents until responsible enough to make it on his own. They might stay reactive and remain immature if they aren’t raised right. The goal is for them to be skilled at getting along with others and to see that working well with others is advantageous to themselves. This includes marriage, work and sports. We want them independent in the sense that they aren’t reactive to what other people do but are patient and considerate while being persistent to get what they want out of life.

Laws and law enforcement are for lawbreakers and thus the immature. Those who don’t comprehend the principles of work for ownership and consideration for others only understand punishment. In the same way an out of control animal needs to be caged, we make laws to keep unreasonable people from hurting others. Don’t get me wrong, I love animals, but the less tame or serving they are, the more dangerous they are. This works with humans on a higher level. It is sad for an animal to be caged and equally sad for citizens to be caged by rules and laws. It is far better and a person has more freedom when they know how to think and plan in a way that is beneficial to themselves and to others.

Rational thought, civility and potential should be the bedrock of our education system. Everyone has potential. We should celebrate rational thought and discussion. And be thankful for living in a civil society. Civility shouldn’t need to be based in strong laws, but be based in the goodness of the people who have formed good habits. The questions when things are falling apart shouldn’t be about punishment. Bad behavior should always be punished. But as with our own child we should first look at where they became lost in their reasoning. The older one gets, the harder it is to change bad habits. Those who reinforce bad habits of thought should be ostracized because they take potential away from those they claim to understand. We should celebrate rational thought and despise those who stoke hysteria by manufacturing wrongdoing.

Good people have used the potential within themselves for centuries to overcome oppression. I myself have experienced it. Study the history of the Irish some time. Everyone has resources of the mind and can honestly accumulate materials to rise out of any circumstance. And while doing it they pull others up by helping them along and by example. The mind’s resources shouldn’t be squandered by using them for crusades and wars, ways to get out of work, excuses and vengeance. So many sharp minds going to waste.

Moments

We go on patiently while our moments pass us by

With eyes fixed on the future, so much to satisfy
The present that we hold can reward or be a thief
Each person has the power to give it good or give it grief
Past and future try to mug all our moments as they come
Convincing us the good ones won’t arrive or can’t be done
But time was made for love and as its servant must obey
When it all seems wrong, knowing love is our touché.

Outdoors

Life seems at times

As though I am looking through a glass
The snowflakes fall outside
It would be so good to feel them on my face
I can only press my face against the pane
My breath steaming the glass
Life itself clouding the view
The air is comfortable inside
But adventure is beyond the glass
Some have been known to starve
Others come back inside
Vowing never to try again
But the glass is cool against my cheek
It can’t be so bad out there
Will the door lock behind me?
Wil I be left shivering alone in the cold?
But I feel I belong there.
This warm house makes more sense
But my mind is outside.

Despite

Inside each heart lies a desire to reach love’s lofty heights

Our very soul cannot survive unless it’s in our sight
But sometimes we’re mistaken and think it’s appetite
A reward that can be won by doing all things right
We try to preen and buy so another will delight
But everything decays, we cannot end the blight
True love becomes stronger when the flesh has lost its might
And the purest love we know will continue on despite

Knowledge

Some things don’t have to be said to be known

When two souls discover they share the same home
When certainty comes there is always a peace
With things that are true there comes a  release
Go ahead and sit, then slowly breath in
Savor, enjoy it; let strength begin
Enjoy the knowledge with every breath
Then soak it all in; let your soul be refreshed.
No one is forgetting, all is intact
There’s no need to worry when given the facts
A smile of defiance fits you so well
The fun part of you shouldn’t be withheld

No Doubt

When I knew you as a kid

I nearly flipped my lid
I had so much to prove
You wanted me to move
We could have talked it out
No doubt
I struggled to find worth
To take away the curse
Tried to hide my poverty
You couldn’t know the real me
We’d have helped each other out
No doubt
But now we’re here again
I don’t want another end
We cannot have it all
But maybe something small
There’s a way to work it out
No doubt

As We Travel

Feelings rise up
And become thought
They grow inside us
Turn into an idea
Requesting action
And over time
Settle into a dream

As we travel
Our memories
Return to us
And want released
Reality fights dreams
Dreams fight reality
Can’t they be friends?
We need them both

Without dreams
We’d never explore
Without reality
We’d never experience
When the two reconcile
It brings happiness

Heaven

If I designed heaven

Every thought would be right
No need to sort them out
I would say what I want
Without worry or concern
I could proclaim love from a housetop
And it would be applauded
I would sing loud and passionate
In a perfect key
With the best accompaniment
Music would always be sweet
Poetry would flow like water
Beautiful syllables
With no need to end
Keep your thoughts of angel wings
And streets of gold
My heaven would be about expression
And knowing what’s in a heart
There would be no embarrassment
Or any other obstruction
Guilt or fear
Obligation or duty
Every joke would be funny
And laughter would rule
If I could design heaven
Actually
It would be exactly like
When you and I are together

If I Could Conquer the Night

I get it; some things are forbidden

And some things are best when left alone
And I appreciate the lot that we’ve been given
Through it all I think we both have grown
And I will be alright
If I could conquer the night

The silhouettes tell me to get moving
Coffees on to help engage my mind
Tasks arise; they have a way of soothing
Avoiding all the things that may remind

The sun is a welcome sight
Wish I could conquer the night

We can’t obligate a person to complete us
We should be glad since life went on the same
Keep moving so nothing can defeat us
With no regrets and no one passing blame

I might win this fight
If I could conquer the night

Purpose

We start out with the joy and delight of discovery

Thinking we should carve out place to keep them
We build monuments to people and memories
But if new dreams aren’t pursued
We will be left behind in mausoleums
Discovery is our purpose
We shouldn’t stop exploring
It is what keeps us young
