Live Free

I’d rather chase a dream
A grandiose plan
Than to follow in a herd
Or worship any man

I’d rather have a friend
Who listens when I cry
Than a hundred entertainers
Pleasing to the eyes

I’d rather know a love
With a heart that longs to stay
Than to cage a pretty bird
That wants to fly away.

I’d rather live as free
Win or lose, succeed or fail
Than to have my life secure
While living in a jail.

Big Iron

The sun is out, gonna earn our pay
We’ll raise an iron rig today
Pull steel pipe through the ground
As the diesel groans, we’ll lay it down

Been doing this for twenty years
Into the dawn, no weather fears
Two feet of snow,
22 below
We don’t care

We’re not after riches
or addicted to thrill
We’ve  got families to feed.
We can stand the chill:

Pull the tongs, throw the chain
Stack the pipe, trip again
Turn the bit, case the hole
The crude has got to flow.

Lost

Guess that’s what happens

I’ve been here before.
Save everyone else.
And leave love on the shore.
Can’t keep myself
yet give him away.
Make everyone happy.
while my happiness stays.
Everything’s good but my heart.
The only one lost is me.

Soulless Man

I gave it all my heart.
And then I gave my soul.
Can’t ask God for help
Can’t do what I am told.
Repair a broken heart?
There’s nothing here but space.
There’ no place to start.
The memories erased.
I’ll venture out and find
another empty soul.
They’re never hard to find.
They’re  everywhere you go.
Well tip a few together
and light a couple smokes.
Then sit around and mock.
Caring’s such a joke.
No broken hearts to mend.
No foolish dreams to chase.
Just sit around, enjoy
this present time and place.
Sometimes we reminisce
on what it’s like to feel.
And laugh at all the cads
who think they’re made of steel.
But secretly inside
desires aren’t all a waste.
I gave my soul away
but kept a little faith.

A Voice

Music may stir the emotions
A wave carry over the oceans
Emotions will strum the strings of a heart
Accompanied by a sweet voice.

Some may fall for a look
Others judge traits by the book
Hearts have a say through the air if you’ll hear.
Love is found in a voice

Hope

Trees shake off the bitter cold
Sprouting leaves shy and bold
Releasing new, forsaking old
Refreshing our senses.

Rain filters through victims past
Feeding life, and sprouting grass
We know the tragedy has passed
Through broken defenses

If this old earth had its way
All hope would turn dark and grey
It’s very roots would see decay
But life is relentless

Life makes a dream of tragedy
This dream a woven a part of me
Aromas, sounds, the things I see
While summer commences

Soft Steel

Thoughts beget words to me.
I freely type across the keys.
My heart will burst and run away.
If I hold back, don’t have a say.
I have this guy who lives inside.
Prone to dream who knows no pride
In some ways weak, others strong
Some claim to know, most are wrong.
This tender heart of steel must sing.
Despite what circumstances bring.
